AATU to provide $500 awards to attend Youth Conservation and Trout Camp

The Michigan Trout Unlimited Youth Conservation and Trout Camp is an immensely fun and rewarding program that brings teenagers from around Michigan to the legendary banks of the Au Sable River—one of the most respected and storied trout streams in the country. Known for its clear water, healthy insect hatches, and thriving trout populations, the Au Sable provides the perfect natural classroom for young anglers and conservationists alike.
Over five unforgettable days, campers take part in hands-on stream conservation projects, learning how habitat improvement, erosion control, and river stewardship directly impact trout fisheries. They work alongside biologists, conservation professionals, and experienced volunteers, gaining a real understanding of what it takes to protect a world-class river system. Fly fishing is a central part of the experience. Campers learn essential skills including fly casting fundamentals, reading current seams and holding water, matching the hatch, knot tying, fly selection, and proper wading techniques. They also gain experience in ethical catch-and-release practices and understanding trout behavior in different river conditions. Time on the Au Sable gives them the opportunity to apply these skills in a true blue-ribbon trout environment.
